Hinky Pinky
I went to practicum today at my normal time. When I got there, the students were still doing Social Studies and where taking a test. My teacher came up to me and told me that they were behind half an hour and she wanted to call me and let me know I could come later, but she didn’t have my cell number. I ended up giving her my number after school was over.
It was interesting watching them take the Social Studies test because they had to work on test taking strategies in order to prepare them for the SOLs. They had to highlight the important words in the questions and on the maps. They were also allowed to write and jot thoughts on the test. After they were done, they had to double check their test then either read or put their head down and stay quiet.
After everyone was done with their test, they pulled out their history notebooks. They had to turn the notebooks in the next day and the notebooks count as a test grade. If they have everything in the notebook then it will really help out their grade. My teacher went over her notebook and showed them step by step everything they should have in there. So the students have the night to get their notebook together if they are missing anything.
After history, they only had 45 minutes before they were done with school, so my teacher pulled out a book called “What Do You Call A Riddle? A Hinky Pinky” that was written by a 5th grade classroom. Basically this book is a book of riddles. There will be a riddle and then the answer will be a hink pink (2 words with 1 syllable each) or a hinky pinky (2 words with 2 syllables each) or a hinkidy pinkidy (2 words with 3 syllables each). My teacher read the book and the students had to guess the answers. They were having trouble thinking of two words that rhymed and had the same syllables. Tomorrow they are going to make their own riddles. There are 3 steps:
1) choose two rhyming words for the answer
2) find a good clue that describes your answer
3) you have to make a picture that fits your rhyme but doesn’t give it away
I wish I could be there tomorrow and see them make their hinky pinky riddles, but I am sure I will see them the next time I go to practicum. I want to get that “Hinky Pinky” book now.
